Faculty Perspectives on Infusing Cultural Relevancy Strategies in the Classroom for Men of Color

The purpose of this webinar was to identify community college faculty members’ culturally relevant teaching practices and strategies for men of color. The culturally relevant teaching practices and strategies were elicited from community college faculty members who were categorized as the Allies and the Choir due to their efforts to foster the success of men of color in the classroom. Through our qualitative analysis we identified the following culturally relevant teaching strategies and practices: (1) Connecting Course Content to Students’ Lived Experiences, (2) Incorporating Culturally Relevant Course Material and Perspectives, (3) Facilitating Critical Discourse about Race, Gender and Racism, (4) Sharing Cultural Background and Academic Journey, (5) Getting to Know Students’ Backgrounds and Personal Goals, (5) Creating Opportunities for Collaborative Learning and Engagement, and (6) Giving Feedback as Form of Care.
